SA Auction Group’s brand new division, Wildlife Online Auctions, hosted their very first online auction of game during the end of February and proved that the game industry is currently experiencing a unique buzz.
15 Species and approximately 250 animals, from the Upper Karoo, came under the digital hammer with most lots passing their reserve prices by great lenghts.
Buffalo, Copper Springbok, White Springbok, Kudu breed group, Zebras, Sables, Kudu bulls, White Blesbok, Oryx, Red Hartebeest, Eland bulls and many more were swept up by buyers but a breeding group of Bontebok was sold for an enormous price of R131 500 per animal, excluding commission. One of the major advantages of this type of online auctions is that the animals are not confined to a boma for long periods. In most cases the animals are at their new home on the same day as capturing. Prospective buyers can also view the animals in their natural habitat before or during the auction.
A number of buyers were asked for comment after the auction that mentioned that online game auctions is a complete new playing field and require high level of trust towards the auctioneer as well as the seller. 44 Registered buyers took part in the auction and the process as a whole ran smoothly. It also came clear that buyers felt comfortable that representatives from SA Auction Group were in regular contact with them.
Louis Janse van Rensburg, from SA Auction Group, says that this first online auction was a test run which turned into an absolute success. Some attention will now be given to some logistical aspects as to make the entire process even smoother. “All expectations were exceeded and will continue to focus on putting all bidders at ease and assist them with any matter”, adds Louis. He also mentions that game is often sold out-of-hand and is marketed on the company’s website and through its database.
